Our Sensei
Preston Kirkham
Head Instructor | 2nd Degree Black Belt
My Judo journey began in 2000 when I was invited to my first judo class by our church pastor. He learned judo in Japan when he was stationed there for his military service.
From 2000-2010 I competed at the local, state and national level, sharpening my skills against high-level opponents across our great country and from many others outside the United States. Eventually I earned a judo scholarship to Texas A&M University College Station where I competed as a team member from 2006- 2010. During my time there, I served as a team captain and president.
Currently, I hold the rank of second-degree black belt (Nidan) and have had the privilege of training at multiple champion-caliber gyms inside and outside the country. Those experiences have shaped my approach to coaching- grounded in discipline, technical precision, and real-world application.
Today, my focus is on passing that knowledge forward-building strong, capable students and helping them grow not just as competitors, but as disciplined moms, dads, students, workers, and community members. Outside of the dojo, my wife, two boys, and I spend time on our lavender farm and apiary. Most Saturdays you will find us at the downtown Lafayette farmer’s market. My wife works in the Medicare industry and my full time job is in the personal finance space.
